Why is my child clumsy?
There are number of reasons why your child is clumsy. The most common causes are that your child is pigeon toed or out toe. The muscles of the body will try and correct the pigeon toeing or out toeing during gait. It is when the muscles get tired that the child reverts to increased pigeon toeing or out toing which can cause the child to trip over.
Signs and symptoms
Children who suffer from clumsiness often:
- Have flat feet
- Often pigeon toed or out toed
- Want to be carried
- Are tired
- Unable to keep up with other children
- Often don’t participate in group activities
- Have bruising
- Injure themselves
- Lack co-ordination
- Lack balance
Causes
There are a number of different factors to consider that can contribute to clumsiness and can include:
- Biomechanical position of the foot.
- Genetics
- Footwear
- Activity level
Clumsiness may result from a combination of the above factors with the most common being a biomechanical or structural abnormality and this can lead the abnormal pronation in the foot.
Treatment:
- Orthotics
- Strengthening exercises
- Proprioception exercises
- Correct footwear
